Rev up for racing

The week usually starts on Sunday, or some would say Monday, but in Great Bend a new week starts tomorrow (Saturday, April 27).
Governor Sam Brownback has proclaimed April 27 through May 5 Kansas Speedweek, honoring Great Bend’s contribution to hot rodding and drag racing history in Kansas. After all, the National Hot Rod Association held its first national championship drag race here in 1955. So, the local Sunflower Rod & Custom Association and the NHRA are sponsoring this week of racing events.
Saturday is the beginning, and racing fans will have an opportunity to see cars traveling at speeds of more than 200 mph out at the drag strip. Events continue through next weekend. Midweek, car lovers can catch Kansas Speedweek Cruise Night on Wednesday, May 1, when vehicles will be circling the courthouse square.
Want to get a jump on the weekend? The drag strip is open today, with gates opening for racers at 3 p.m. Test n’ Tune is at 7:30 p.m., and at 8:30 drivers will be “racing for pinks” in a Gamblers Race.
Back in 1955, The Nationals went for three days but then they were rained out by the worst rainstorm in 30 years. The final runs were completed later that year in  Phoenix, Ariz. While there may be some showers in the coming days, it appears pleasant weather has finally settled in, so put on some hot rod music and enjoy the spectacle.
