Thank the kids for community service

Next week, hundreds of our local students plan to donate some time to their home town.
On Wednesday, April 24, Great Bend High School students will be taking part in Community Service Day. According to Community Coordinator Christina Hayes, who is working with GBHS teachers to organize this, there are some ambitious projects planned. Many will be doing cleanup and trash pickup, at the city entrances, the Expo grounds, the parks and ball fields and other municipal sites. Some will do maintenance jobs like painting, or helping with basic repairs.
Others will scrape those paintings of red shoes off of store windows – or maybe not. The shoe paintings were done to promote Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, the event that was supposed to take place this week in Jack Kilby Square. But that event has been rescheduled for 6-8 p.m. next week, on Thursday, April 25. It will raise funds and awareness for the Family Crisis Center. (There’s a story on today’s front page if you need more information on this.) Whether the red shoes disappear next week or a little later, the next thing to be done downtown is prepping for the June Jaunt, and our teen volunteers will be involved in that.
So, by the end of the month, we hope the town will look a little cleaner and brighter, so that guests and those who see it every day will enjoy it a little more. Those who do the work will appreciate it most of all.
