Barton jumpers sweep Athletes of Year

 The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced their indoor regional awards with the Barton Community College track and field team earning thirty-eight All-America awards highlighted by three prestigious honors.

A pair of Cougar freshmen earned National Field Athletes of the Year while Trent Edgerton was named National Men's Assistant Coach of the Year following the men's third straight national runner-up finish, the latest coming this past spring at the 2020 NJCAA Indoor Championships held at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg, Va.

Annia Ashley garnered the women's award after compiling a field meet best 28 winning two jump events and placing runner-up. Ashley's national titles came in the long jump at (19-7) and the high jump (5-71/4) with her runner-up placing triple jump (40-11).

In the men's field, Shakwon Coke earned the award setting two personal best performance in sweeping the horizontal jumps at the NJCAA Championships. Coke won the triple jump (53-11/2) to win by more than two feet with the ninth all-time jump. Coke won the long jump (25-61/4), No. 5 on the all-time program list.

Ashley's two championships were half of the women's four individual titles while Coke's pair were of the five event winners by the Cougar men. Both were also selected as the Central Region field athletes of the year.

Completing his first year in the Barton program, Edgerton's primary responsibilities were in the sprints, hurdles, and mid-distance with his group of Cougars accounting for 53 of Barton's 99.5 points including three individual national championships. Davonte Burnett won the 60m in 6.62 for the nation's 9th best all-time clocking and just .01 seconds off his program third best time, Caleb Boger's 3rd best all-time and school record 20.68 in the 200m, and Phillip Lemonious' 7.80 60m hurdle clocking coming up shy of his program's third best and nation's 5th best all-time performance set earlier in the season.

The Barton women's performances at the national championships produced sixteen placers with twelve personal best efforts including a pair of adjustments to the storied program record book while the men also produced sixteen scoring performances highlighted by breaking three program records among its twenty-personal best with seven total record book adjustments.

Joining Ashley and Coke on the post-season award list, Fiona Richards was recognized as the Central Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year. Richards shattered the school record in the shot put earlier in the season, setting the new mark of 16.28m (53-05.00) to rank 4th best all-time in NJCAA history while ranking 3rd in the weight throw at 17.04m (55-11.00) to also land 5th best in Cougar history.

Student-athletes earned USTFCCCA All-America status by virtue of finishing among the top-8 in their events, including as a member of a relay team, at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships, while coaching honors were voted and selected by coaches within the USTFCCCA.
