It was pretty much the season opener everyone expected.
The Barton men's basketball, riding three straight 25-win seasons and the pre-season pick to win the Jayhawk West, against a junior varsity team to start the new season.
The result – a 127-85 win for Barton over the McPherson JV.
The Cougars took a bit of time to get things rolling, but the outcome was pretty much known from the opening tip.
At the midway point on the opening half, the Cougars led just 28-23. That was before a 10-0 by Barton in just over one minute.
It didn't stop there.
A 9-0 spurt later was part of a 40-15 run by the Cougars over the final 10 minutes of the half put the Cougars in firm control of things, leading 68-38 at intermission.
Ball game.
Barton put eight players in double figures in the win – none of which scored more than 15 points. Jaheim Holden led Barton with those 15 points off the bench in his first game as a Cougar.
Keandre Bowles added 14 off the bench. In all, Barton tallied 72 bench points in the win. Desean Munson and Anthony Ennking also scored double figures off the bench with 11 each. Munson led all Cougars will 11 rebounds.
As far as the starters, returning players Diovonte Caldwell and Martin Vogts each scored 13 as did freshman Justin Harmon. DeMarcus Morris added 11.
Barton hit a blistering 62 percent from the floor on 54-of-87 shooting.
Macksville High School's Karson Waters scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for McPherson.
The Cougars have another JV team on the slate before heading to the Blue Dragon Classic in Hutchinson next weekend. The Bethel JV visits the Barton Gym Wednesday for a 7:30 tip.
