GOODLAND – The game didn’t have much riding on the outcome. It was a game that had twice been rescheduled and thus became the final game of the regular season.
Monday afternoon the Barton men’s soccer team boarded the team bus and made the 3 hour trip to Goodland, closing out the regular season with a 4-0 win over Northwest Tech.
Barton finished the regular season with a 12-5-1 overall record. The Cougars were 8-3-1 in the western half of the region and will take the No. 2 seed from the West into the Region VI playoffs.
Northwest Tech is 7-7-1 overall and 5-6 in the region.
The Cougars took a 1-0 just minutes into the contest. Alexander Kay scored his first goal of the season just more than five minutes into the contest to give the Cougars a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.
But that lead would stay at 1-0 the entire first half.
The Cougars weren’t able to gain some cushion until the Cougars put three more goals on the board in the second half to secure the win.
Barton now turns it focus to the Region VI tournament, where the Cougars will need two wins to move into the Plains District tournament and a shot at the NCJAA National Tournament.
As the No. 2 seed from the West, the Cougars will open the post season against the No. 3 seed from the East. That will more than likely be Cowley.
The first round contest will be Thursday with the semifinals on Sunday. The semifinal winners will then move on to the Plains District Championship in Topeka Nov. 4 and 5 for the right to play in the NJCAA Championships.
The Plains District will have teams from Regions 2, 5 and 6 competing. Region 6 will have two teams. Regions 2 and 5 will each have one team. Region 2 has just four teams from Oklahoma while Region 5 consists of three teams from northern Texas.
