DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Barton Community College women’s golf team overtook Bismarck State in the final round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s Golf Championship for 17th place.
There were 41 schools from around the country, represented by 148 players at the national meet playing on the LPGA International Legends course.
“We took 17th in the nation, which is not a bad finish for Barton,” BCC head coach Doug Kaiser said. “All of the girls played well. I told them to add about seven to 10 strokes to their averages back home. This course is just that tough.
“The greens are lightning fast. The girls were amazed when we went out for our practice round.”
In the third round, the Lady Cougars combined for 410 — their best round at that point.
Barton put together its best round to close the meet, shooting a 404 to finish the week at 1,667.
“Bismarck State was leading us by one going into the final round,” Kaiser said. “We set a goal for ourselves to beat them, and we ended up beating them by 30 strokes. The girls really shot a great round to finish the meet.”
Daytona State won the championship with a score of 1,195.
Rachel Strecker, who was the top finisher for the Lady Cougars, tied for 65th place with a total score of 378. Strecker also shot the lowest round of any Barton golfer by shooting an 89 in the fourth round.
“She did great,” Kaiser said. “The weather was perfect. There was no wind and it was cool. It warmed up on the last day, but she plays well in warm weather.
“Her goal after last year was to break 90 on this course, I think. She finished up her last round as a Cougar by meeting her goal.”
Chelseas Dietz finished in 100th place with a four-round score of 419.
Shanda Thompson shot a 434 to take 106th place.
“Shanda struggled a little bit on the first day and in the third round,” Kaiser said, “but that course is just so tough. She usually averages about 94 to 96 for us back home. She had a little putting problem, but she figured it out.”
Lindsey Wait finished the meet with a score of 436 to tie for 107th place.
“All four of the girls did really well,” Kaiser said. “They had great attitudes all week. I told them to be ready for the elements, and they came through.
“Chelsea and Lindsey are already looking forward to next year. I’m just proud of all of them.”
