After finishing 12th at the 2014 NJCAA Division I National Tennis Championships, the unranked Barton Community College men’s tennis team jumped into 13th place of the final release of the season’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National rankings.
The Cougars’ placing, the largest upward movement in the polls by any team in the nation, was the third-best ranking of fellow Region VI teams as Cowley finished fourth and Johnson County came in at ninth.
Seward County also joined the mix of ranked region teams, finishing at 22nd.
Barton also had two Cougars place in the individual rankings, as well as, its top doubles team.
Battling injuries throughout the second half of the season, freshman Vinicius Ono finished at 16th, while sophomore Alvaro Martinez fought through his own late season injuries to conclude his Barton career as the nation’s 29th best player.
Earning the No. 6 seed for the national championships, the Ono-Martinez duo’s combined injuries plagued their run in the bracket getting upset in the Round of 16 with a third set 7-5 tie breaker loss to end their season and finish 10th in the final rankings.
