It was another tough draw for an opener. After playing a nationally ranked team to open the season, the Barton women’s soccer team got to play the favorite in the Jayhawk West to open conference play.
The result was a 6-0 loss at Hutchinson Saturday afternoon. Those two matches are the only two losses to date for the Cougars. Barton is now 1-2-1 on the season while Hutchinson is 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the West.
Barton made the Blue Dragons work for much of the first half. The first 30 minutes of the opening half were fought to a scoreless draw.
Hutch broke the tie with a goal from Jordan Downing 30:55 into the contest for a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Hutchinson added another 10 minutes later. This time by Jazmin Hartshorn and the Blue Dragons went to half with a 2-0 lead.
The second half saw the Blue Dragons start to pull away. Hartshorn made it a 3-0 game just five minutes into the second half. Downing and Sheena Nicol added goals within eight minutes of each other later in the half that pushed the lead to 5-0.
Nicol added another late goal for the final margin.
Barton got off eight shots in the loss, putting five of them on goal. Amber Miller led the attack with three shots on goal but none were able to find the net. Maddison Schofield had the other two shots on goal for Barton.
Hutchinson, meanwhile, put 16 of its 32 shots on goal with Alexandra Capalbo saving 10 of those shots for the Cougars.
Barton will be back looking for its first West win Wednesday when the Dodge City Conquistadors pay a visit to the Cougar Sports Complex. It will be the first of two home dates this week as Pratt comes in Sunday.
Dodge is 1-1 in the West and 2-2 overall while Pratt is winless at 0-2 and 0-4. Kickoff Wednesday is set for 2 pm.
