Barton Community College's showdown with fellow 2023 NJCAA national tournament qualifier North Dakota State College of Science lived up to its billing.

The Cougars broke a 46-46 tie with a 11-point run en route to a 63-51 non-conference victory over the Wildcats. 

Vivian Onugha scored five points, Gracen John hit a 3-pointer and Vera Ojenuwa added a basket during the game-clinching 11-poinr run over a 4-minute stretch.

Barton trailed 21-11 after one quarter, but a 15-point run led to a 32-25 halftime lead.

The Wildcats gained the third quarter edge in taking back the lead on a 15-6 stretch but Barton would respond in taking a one-point advantage to the final frame.

Barton (11-3) has won four in a row while stopping North Dakota's (13-3) nine game winning streak.

Barton plays Wednesday at Garden City Community College and returns home Jan. 13 against Dodge City at 2 p.m.

The Cougars had a plus-10 point advantage in the paint led by Vivian Onugha posting a pair of career highs on the afternoon in dumping in 21 points on 50% shooting and five steals and eight rebounds.

Barton gained a plus-13 point edge off the bench. St. John's Darby Smith scored a career high eight points and converted her first two 3-pointers. Pretty Prairie's McKenna Vogl scored six points.

Shania Nichols-Vannett led the Wildcats with 18 points with Savanna Jones adding 11 points and eight rebounds.
