The Barton women’s tennis team split region battles this past week, winning against Hesston then losing at national power Seward County.
Barton blanked Hesston by a 9-0 count but could only manage one win in Liberal. Both days the teams had to fight through high winds.
“We spent about four hours putting windscreens back into place for our home match,” Coach Lyle Stickney said. “We were hoping it would tame the 40 mph winds. It didn’t. Fortunately, the teams, for the most part, were able to preserve and play through Mother Nature’s cruel joke.”
In the win over Hesston, ninth ranked Neus Torregrosa rolled to an easy win over, 6-0, 6-1 then teamed up with Sarah Hammer for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
“Neus improved to 4-0 in singles and she and Sarah are beginning to put it together on the doubles side,” Coach Stickney said.
Hammer was leading in the first set at No. 2 singles and Ksenija Dmitrovic the same at No. 3 when their competition retired. Shai Cartmill rolled at No. 4 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 while Jenna Groene and Thamires Lima both won by default.
Groene and Cartmill won at No. 2 doubles, 8-2.
The lone win at Seward came when Dmitrovic, ranked 32nd in the NJCAA, won by default at No. 3. Torregrosa suffered her first loss of the year when she took on No. 8 ranked Patricia Panta, losing 6-0, 6-4.
Seward, ranked third in the nation, had four players ranked in the top 50 in singles and two doubles teams in the top 11.
