BCC ends perfect non-conference season schedule

Eight days into the regular season schedule and all that is left now is Jayhawk Conference games.
The Barton men’s basketball team wrapped up its four-game non conference season with a perfect 4-0 mark after disposing of the Sterling JV Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.
Barton handed the Warriors a 110-78 setback and now turn its attention to Colby as the Trojans come to the Barton Gym to open the Jayhawk Conference 26-game season.
“I’m pleased with the win but the stakes a little higher now with conference getting started,” Coach Craig Fletchall.
After struggling to a 2-for-14 3-point shooting first half, the Cougars erupted for a 10-for-17 effort in the second half. Barton has double figures treys in all four games this season.
Sterling was 12-for-41 on treys and just 13-of-28 on 2-pointers.
“We knew they were going to shoot 3’s,” Coach Fletchall said. “I thought they outplayed us for the most part. They just didn’t make their shots. We didn’t have that scrappy play. Hopefully its back Saturday.”
Barton took a while Wednesday night to put some distance between itself and the Sterling JV. Sterling led 9-6 and the Cougars and Warriors were tied at 11-all with just more than 14 minutes left in the first half.
At that point Akeem White threw down a dunk off a steal and ignited a 7-0 run. Barton would not trail again.
A 9-0 run later in the half extended the lead to 15 and by halftime, Barton had built a 54-36 lead.
Akeem White led the Cougars with 22 points in just 15 minutes of action. Kawanise ‘Squeaky’ Wilkins had a big game with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.
In all, four Cougars reached double figures and 12 of the 14 that played scored in the contest.
Keith Price scored a game-high 26 points for the Sterling JV.
Next up is Colby Saturday. The Cougars will tip off the Jayhawk Conference season at 7:30 pm.
“It is just an entirely different ball game now,” Coach Fletchall said. “Conference play is completely different. Our kids need to understand that and be ready to go.”
