 HOME GAMES IN ALL CAPS
*KJCCC Western Division game

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team begins its season tonight against the Bethany junior varsity. Tipoff is set for 6 at the BCC gymnasium.
The Cougars were chosen to finish in sixth place of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division.
Cougars head coach Keith Ferguson, who is entering his second year as head coach at BCC, said that he believes his team has a chance to improve on last year.
“I think this team has a chance to be pretty good,” Ferguson said. “We’ve made some freshman mistakes but the good thing is those mistakes are easily fixed.
“I think we are going to struggle early because we play such a tough non-conference schedule. In conference, if we can weather this storm and get to conference, we’ll be pretty good.”
Barton finished with a record of 14-16 last season, including a KJCCC West record of 7-9, a record good enough for sixth place.
In Barton’s preseason scrimmages, Ferguson said he likes what he sees.
“It’s been really well,” Ferguson said. “We scrimmaged Hays (last week) and that went all right. We’re getting better. It’s just that, you know, we’ve got 10 freshmen.
“We are a lot more talented than last year. We’ve got a lot more depth. We have 10 or 11 kids that I think can step in and be productive.”
The Cougars return only one player from last season, Alisha Fanshier, one of three sophomores on the team.
Fanshier, from St. John, connected on 37 percent of her 3-pointers, leading the Cougars with 56 baskets from beyond the arc last season. She also converted 84 percent of her free throws.
“Alisha has been really good,” Ferguson said. “She is fighting for her position, but she is going to have to sit out a little while because she broke team rules.”
Ferguson said his team will be anchored by 6-foot-4 freshman center Netanya Jackson.
“Netanya has been real good,” Ferguson said. “I think she’s been shooting 70 percent in scrimmages. We just don’t get her the ball enough. She needs to touch it 15-20 times a game, at least.”
Ferguson will also look to Raven Adams, a 5-5 sophomore guard, who transferred to Barton and had to sit out last season, to aid the
“We’ve been up and down at the point guard,” Ferguson said. “We have Raven and Cerissa (McMillan) have been really good and then just average. They’ve had moments where they have to be steadier and not turn the ball over as much.”
It is the team’s attitude, Ferguson said, that will carry his team this season.
“We have a kind of cocky group and I like it,” Ferguson said. “They have that ‘I’m better than you’ attitude and we need a little of that.”
