The only lingering question during second-half action of Barton Community College’s women’s basketball team’s 2010-11 season-opening game Tuesday night was if the Cougars would break the century mark against the Bethany junior varsity.
After all, the Cougars’ lead had already grown to over 50 points with nine minutes still to play as the scoreboard read: 77-26.
The question was answered near the three-minute mark as the Cougars had scored only 12 points over the next six minutes. As a result, not scoring 100 points was about the only thing Barton didn’t do in rolling to a 95-37 over the hapless Swedes.
Dionne Harris, a freshman forward from Philadelphia, Pa., poured in a game-high 23 points and Christina Caddy, a freshman guard from Lawton, Okla., scored 12 of her 19 points in the second half to lead the Cougars.
Netanya Jackson scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half, and Jade Glonz scored 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Shea Shoekmaker added a pair of 3s and also finished with 11 points.
The knockout punch was served early in the second half, even though Barton was already in command at halftime, leading 35-19.
The Cougars started heating up from long distance after the break. Great Bend High School product Devan Boeger hit two 3-pointers and Cerissa McMillan and Jade Shoemaker had one apiece. It stretched the Cougars’ lead to 67-22 with 10 minutes still remaining;.
The lead grew to 71-26 with just under nine minutes to play after Shoemaker hit another 3, and 77-26 after Glunz buried her third 3.
The Cougars used a pair of big runs in the opening half to move out to their 16-point halftime lead.
Barton led 4-3 before breaking through for a 13-0 run for a 17-5, highlighted by right-wing 3-pointers by Jade Glunz and Shoemaker.
The Swedes finally broke a five-minute, 39-second drought, when Heather Eddings knocked down a 3 at the 10:27 mark.
Harris started a 10-3 run after putting in a turnaround jump shot in the lane, the first of three straight baskets for the athletic 5-foot-11 freshman from Philadelphia, Pa. The surge put Barton up 27-11 at the 8:26 mark.
