Butler women outlast Barton
Barton Cougars blk .tif

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team fell 53-48 to the Butler College for the second time this season Wednesday at the Kirkman Center.
Leading the conference in offensive rebounds, the Cougars were held to a season low four offensive boards but trailed by one possession before its 25th turnover of the game sealed the fate with nine seconds to play.
Butler (14-5, 11-5 Jayhawk) moves into fifth place while Barton (11-9, 8-8 Jayhawk) occupies seventh place. No. 7 Seward County (19-1, 15-1 Jayhawk) invades Barton for a 5:30 p.m. game Saturday.
Battling back from an early double-digit deficit, Barton turned the tide with an 11-0 run keyed by Regan Unruh’s 3-pointer. Lauren Welsch tallied the next three points before Katrina Roenfeldt knocked down her second trey of the half with Jalisa Jones capping the run with her ninth point of the first 16 minutes. The Grizzlies finished the half with a 9-0 run for a 28-25 lead.
Barton led 43-41 with six minutes remaining before a 9-0 Butler run put the Grizzlies in front 50-43.
A Jones layup with 1:16 to play cut the deficit to one before a Butler jumper 10 seconds later pushed the lead back to three. Unruh’s running jumper fell off the rim with 48 seconds left and with the Cougars forcing Butler to make one last shot to increase the lead, Welsch secured the Grizzly miss setting up an opportunity to potentially tie on a three.
Barton instead committed its 25th turnover and Kendriana Washington iced the victory with two free throws.
Jones led the Cougars with 12 points and three assists. Welsch added 10 off the bench. Roenfeldt finished with nine points and six rebounds.
