Perry Ellis, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward and a senior at Wichita Heights High School, verbally committed to the University of Kansas on Wednesday.
Ellis had previously narrowed his choices to Kansas, Kentucky, Kansas State and Wichita State before choosing KU. Jayhawks head coach Bill Self attended Ellis’ first high school game, which Ellis said was instrumental in his recruitment.
Ellis led Wichita Heights to a third straight Class 6A state title this past March.
“I love being around my family and Kansas was not too far and not too close,” Ellis told USA Today. “I’m excited about my choice. You see what (Self) has done with his players, for example the twins (Marcus and Markieff Morris). You can see how he improved them.”
Ellis is rated as the No. 33 player in the nation by Scout.com and No. 24 player by Rivals.com.
The athletic Ellis averaged 22.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game last season.
