WACO, Texas – More than half of the Barton women’s tennis team moved into the second round on the winner’s side of the NJCAA Championships after day one of competition was complete in Waco, Texas.
Three singles draws and two doubles draws stayed in the winner’s bracket.
In the singles draw, Barton’s No. 1 and 2 players advanced along with the No. 5 singles player.
At No. 1 singles, Neus Torregrosa rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Marta Caballero of Lewis & Clark College. That sets up a second-round showdown between Torregrosa, the No. 9 ranked player, and No. 4 seed Valentina Gonzalez of Seminole State.
Sarah Hammer also advanced in fairly easy fashion, winning 6-2, 6-2 over Cindy Anders of Mesa. That gives Hammer the opportunity to take on the top seed in the draw in Maria Genovese of Tyler in the second round.
Also advancing to the second round was Jenna Groene at No. 5 singles. Groene defeated New Mexico Military’s Becsave Pacheco, 6-0, 6-1. She will take on the fifth seeded Priscilla Morales of Laredo in the Round of 16.
Barton’s No. 2 doubles team of Groene and Hammer won a battle over Meghan Houk and Lien Nguyen of Pima in three sets. The Barton tandem won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the Round of 16 and a date with Agustina Diaz and Vasavi Shanthi of Abraham Baldwin, the third seed in the draw.
Barton’s No. 3 doubles team of Ksenija Dmitrovic and Thamires Lima drew a bye and now will get the top seed in the draw from Tyler.
Dropping their first round matches and moving into the consolation bracket were three singles players and one doubles team.
Dmitrovic lost her opener at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2 to Hannah Rey of Collin. Shai Cartmill lost at No. 4 singles to Tempie Ennis of Wallace State, 6-0, 6-0 and Lima lost 6-2, 6-4 to Jenna Brown of Lewis and Clark.
Barton’s No. 1 doubles team of Torregrosa and Cartmill lost their opener to Mikayla Lopez and Georjemah Row of New Mexico Military, 6-3, 6-2.
