The outdoor track and field season got off to a start Friday in Emporia as the Barton women competed it the Emporia Spring Open.

EMPORIA – The outdoor track and field season got off to a start Friday in Emporia as the Barton women competed it the Emporia Spring Open.
Mahendra McWhite led the Cougars with its only win early in the season as a limited squad competed.
McWhite won the 100m hurdles in 14.0. Olivian Jackson was fourth in the 100m hurdles in 14.76 and took second in the 400m hurdles in 1:05.08.
Barton had a pair of runner-up efforts in the sprints. Nijah Roberson was second in the 200m in 24.86 and third in the 100m in 11.98. Rashan Darling ran a 12.16 for eighth in the 100m.
Cadeebra Calcote took second in the 400m in 56.12 and Azan Sargusingh sixth in 58.26.
The only field event the Cougars placed in was the discus where Shyledeen Smith was fourth at 142-1 and Latavia Maines eighth at 135-8.
Barton ran a pair relay teams in the 4x100m, finishing second and fourth.
The Cougars will head to Texas for the Texas Relay the final weekend of March.
