Cougars advance to title game

TOPEKA — At the NJCAA Region VI tournament at Hummer Park in Topeka, it’s win and play another day, or lose and watch your season end.
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team beat Dodge City on Saturday 2-0 to advance to the championship game.
Barton (15-2-1) will face Johnson (11-7) at noon today. Johnson won 4-2 over Cowley.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars finally broke through a troublesome offside trap at the 59:08 mark on a Sam McCrillis goal. Gonzalo Gelso got the assist.
Barton put the game away with 8:59 remaining as Hector Mata scored put a McCrillis cross pass into the net.

Lady Cougars end season
in Region VI semifinal
The Barton women’s soccer season came to an end on Saturday night in a 3-1 loss to No. 8-ranked Hutchinson in a Region VI semifinal game.
Barton ends its season at 15-4-1, while Hutch (16-1) advances to the championship game against Butler. Butler beat Johnson County 2-1 on a late goal.
Barton leading scorer Biance Barron, who spent most of the first half on the bench due to injury, returned to field after Hutch pulled ahead 1-0 on a goal from Melissa Hetherington. Barron scored the tying goal with 1:07 before halftime as she slipped through the defense to kick in an Olimpia Bonilla pass.
Hetherington scored two more goals in the second half to give the Lady Dragons the victory.
