If there was a silver lining to the weekend series at Hutchinson’s Hobart-Detter Field, the Barton Community College baseball team clinched a spot in the upcoming NJCAA Region VI Tournament.
The downside for the Cougars was dropping three of four games to the No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons.
Hutchinson took Friday’s doubleheader 6-2 and 7-6, but the Cougars grabbed the first of Saturday’s twinbill 12-7.
The Blue Dragons clinched the series with a fifth-inning grand slam to win 8-3.
The Cougars dropped to 26-23-1 on the season and 11-17 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while Hutchinson improved to 36-14 overall and sit atop the Jayhawk standings at 20-8.
Barton will host the Kansas Wesleyan Junior Varsity in a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday before hosting Pratt in a weekend series to determine the seventh seed in regional play.
