Sophomore Diogo Quirino was named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Defender of the Year.
Quirino led a group of eight players from the Barton Community College men’s soccer team that were selected to the all-conference lists.
“This was a very deserving award,” Barton head coach Oliver Twelvetrees said. “He’s a great kid. He has a bright future. He’ll go to a big-time Division-I program.
“He hasn’t committed yet, but he’s had some calls from South Carolina and South Florida. Those are some big soccer schools.”
Twelvetrees was named Coach of the Year. It was his fourth conference coaching award in seven seasons with Barton.
Twelvetrees has taken the head coaching role at Brevard Community College in Melbourne, Fla.
Barton’s season ended with a 2-0 loss to Western Texas in the Plains District championship game on Saturday afternoon.
“Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to achieve my No. 1 major ambition, which was win a national title here at Barton,” Twelvetrees said. “This was certainly another good year, but I’m a little disappointed I wasn’t able to bring a national title.”
Sam McCrillis and Ebu Camara were selected as first-team forwards. Both finished the season with a team-leading 18 goals.
“Both had good seasons,” Twelvetrees said. “Sam finished as an all-time leader in points (goals and assists) scored at Barton. It’s an excellent achievement.
“Ebu, as a freshman, was a great threat. He just keeps improving.”
Barton, which finished the season ranked No. 6, had two midfielders (Gonzalo Gelso and Armando Hipolito), two defenders (Quirino and Carter Way) and a goalkeeper (Mauricio Campos) on the first team.
Mariano Gelso was selected as a second-team midfielder.
“We had a very talented team,” Twelvetrees said. “We had one of the best teams in the country, but we got upset.
“Statistically, we had one of the best teams ever, and if we’d gotten to the national tournament, we could have shown it.”
