Barton softball drops season openers to Cowley.

For a good portion of the day, it had a feeling of a sweep for the Barton softball team.
The Cougars had scored in five of the first eight innings during the Jayhawk West doubleheader while Independence had tallied a total of two runs – both unearned.
But things slipped away from Barton in the nightcap as the Cougars ended the day with a split. Barton won 12-2 in the first game at Cougar Fields then lost 8-4 in the second game.
Barton is now 3-1 in the Jayhawk and 10-7 overall. Indy is 1-3 in the Jayhawk and 2-10 overall.
Barton hammered the ball around the park in the opener, scoring five times in the second, three more in the fourth and ending the game by run-rule with four in the fifth.
Karsyn Smith gave up just one hit in the win and the two unearned runs to improve to 7-3.
At the plate, the Cougars pounded out 16 hits in five innings as Kayli Dryden, Betsy Parmley and Lexi Dryden each collecting three.
Parmley went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Lexi Dryden was a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and Kayli Dryden 3-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Lia Chan had two hits and five RBI while Bailie Stanley added three RBI on two hits.
The Cougars appeared to be off and running in game two as well, scoring single runs in each the second and third for a 2-0 lead.
But things turned in the top the third when Kiana Turner hit a 3-run home run to give Indy the lead.
Barton would come back to tie the game at 4-all in the bottom of the fifth before the Pirates plated four runs in the sixth for the win.
The Cougars will travel to Hutchinson Wednesday for two more Jayhawk West contests.
