Barton Community College head coach Craig Fletchell knows he needs depth to endure the rigors of the upcoming Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference basketball race.
On Monday night at Kirkman Athletic Center, guard Kevin Barber made his mark in trying to land a spot in the Cougars’ rotation.
In just 18 minutes of action, Barber, a 6-foot-2 freshman from Ottawa, scored 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out five assists and made two steals during Barton’s 110-73 dismantling of the overmatched McPherson College junior varsity.
Adam Young added 18 points and nine rebounds, Dwayne Brunson had 16 points and 10 boards and Chris Cantino had 14 points and grabbed nine caroms for the Cougars, who did what they wanted against the perimeter-shooting JV squad that missed 26 of its 37 3-pointers.
“We feel like we can go 11 deep and yet, I don’t think our bench was a strength during the classic over the weekend like it should have been,” said Fletchall, alluding to BCC’s overtime loss to Independence on Saturday during the second night of the Barton Booster Classic, dropping the Cougars’ record to 7-1 overall.
“We challenged our guys a little bit tonight and everybody was going to play their minutes and share the ball equally. But we need a couple of those in-state freshmen to step up and be contributors because you’re going to need eight or nine guys stepping up during the conference season.”
Barber hit 7 of 14 field goals, including 3-for-7 on 3-pointers, in a game where there was no intensity or electricity whatsoever.
While McPherson began tiring after throwing up 3-pointer after 3-pointer, making only 24.3 percent on the night, the Cougars turned the game into a layup drill on the other end.
It was BCC freshman guard Storm Sanders, who had nine points and two assists in 20 minutes, that got the Cougars offense flowing in the early going.
“Storm is one of our energy guys and he definitely is one of our emotional leaders,” Fletchall said of Sanders. “He didn’t let up at all tonight.
“Coming off the heels of a 39-minute, no-turnover performance (against Indy), he’s only going to get better.”
