COLBY – It was a quick night on the mat for the Barton wrestlers Wednesday night in Colby.

With just five matches decided on the floor, it was not a long stay for the Cougars at the Community Building. Barton rolled to an easy 42-6 win over Colby, wrestling mostly backups during the Jayhawk Conference dual.

The Cougars won four of the matches on the mat, picked up three more wins by forfeit with two of the weights left open by both teams.

All five matches were pins.

For three Cougar wrestlers, it was their first dual action of the season. Johnney Perez, Juan Centeno, and Tre Kline all won their first time out in duals this season.

Perez pinned Tim Westbrook at 133, Centeno took down Joey Unruh at 141 and Kline did likewise with Dalton Moody at 157.

The Cougars’ other pin was by Kendall Johnson at 197, where he improved to 2-1 in duals with his fall over Sean Jackson.

Gage McBride (174), Joey Ewalt (184), and Jacob Robles (285) all won by forfeit.

The lone loss was with Gable Howerton leading Colby’s Dino Blades before getting turned and pinned. It was just Howerton’s second loss in duals, now 6-2.

The Cougars are 2-1 in the Jayhawk in duals with four more on top this weekend in Pratt as part of the Jayhawk Conference Dual Championships.

The No. 22 Cougars will take on Cowley and No. 14 Labette Friday at Lesh Auditorium on the campus of Pratt Community College. Saturday will have Baton wrestling No. 11 Pratt and Neosho.

Barton has already beaten Cloud this year and lost to No. 3 Northwest Tech.

The NJCAA District Championships will be the next event for Barton following the conference action this weekend. That will take place in Parsons on Feb. 16.
