Sophomore point guard Al Key scorched the Friends University junior varsity for 24 points in the second half.
Jumping to a double-digit lead early, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team broke the century mark for a 103-64 victory.
“I wasn’t real pleased early,” Fletchall said. “I thought our focus was better in the second half. We just wanted to impose our will defensively. I thought we got away from that in (Saturday’s 92-90 win over Northwest Kansas Technical College).
“I thought it was better tonight.”
After the Falcons dropped in a 3-pointer to open the game, Barton went on an 11-2 run that gave it a lead it would not relinquish.
Runs of 14-2 and 16-3 led by Key, who finished the first half with 10 points, helped the Cougars to a 44-25 advantage at the end of the first period.
Key finished with 34 points, shooting 10-for-11 from the free-throw line.
“We had several players that could have taken over (the game),” Fletchall said. “I will say he had the look of an assassin. He took some of the JV games off last year, but I thought he had the right mentality here tonight. I think the other fed off him in the second half. He got the ball in transition and pushed the ball up the floor.”
Andell Cumberbatch scored nine points, and cleaned up on the boards in the first half, grabbing seven rebounds.
Cumberbatch finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and reeling in 11 rebounds.
“Very solid,” Fletchall said of Cumberbatch’s play. “I thought that his length has been bothering a lot of people. He’s probably our most improved player."
The Cougars scored 59 points in the second half, with Trey Unrau scoring 11 points, and Rapheal Stephens adding 10.
Barton travels to Ottawa University to face the junior varsity squad on Thursday night, starting at 7.
