WACO, Texas – The 2018 NJCAA National Tennis Championships are not done just yet for the Barton women.
The Cougars kept two draws alive in the consolation side of the bracket, with Ksenija Dmitrovic advancing the finals at No. 3 singles.
In addition to Dmitrovic’s run to the finals in singles, Barton’s No. 1 doubles team is still playing, reaching the semifinals in Waco. Neus Torregrosa and Shai Cartmill have worked their way to the semifinals in the draw.
As a team, the Cougars are currently in 19th place overall with 11 points. Hillsborough (Fla) and Tyler (Texas) are currently tied for the lead at the event with 36 points followed closely by defending national champion ASA Miami with 35.
From Region VI, Seward County is sitting in sixth at 24.5 and Cowley in eighth with 21 points.
Dmitrovic won a pair of matches on day three of the event to reach the consolation finals. The freshman defeated Mary Wolse of Wallace State in the quarterfinals, 8-3, in the morning. Later in the day she returned to the court and defeated Polly Evans of Eastern Arizona by that same 8-3 margin.
Dmitrovic will take on Meghan Houk of Pima in the No. 3 consolation finals.
Torregrosa and Cartmill won their only doubles match on day three. The duo defeated Caitlin Gallagher and Elizabeth Towell of Waubonsee in the quarterfinals of the consolation draw at No. 1, 8-3. The Barton pair will take on Sydney Misiek and Sjana Henderson of Lake County in the semifinals.
At No. 4 singles, Cartmill lost to Janine Duque of Eastern Florida in the consolation quarterfinals, 8-0, to end her run through the consolation draw in singles.
Dmitrovic also played in the consolation bracket in doubles on day three. Thamires Lima and Dmitrovic lost in the quarterfinals to Ashley Fitzsimmons and Jayme Shafer of Pima at No. 3 doubles. The contest was tight throughout and eventually went to a tie-breaker before the Barton tandem lost 9-8 (6).
