Freshman Reyna Gonzalez was selected first team All Region VI goalkeeper for her efforts this past season for the Barton women’s soccer team.
She was the only Cougars named to the All Region team. But nine Barton players were picked to the All Jayhawk West team, with Gonzalez also being tabbed as the first team keeper.
Eight more Barton players were picked to the second team.
Gonzalez started nearly all the games in goal for the Cougars this season, allowing just 1.27 goal per game while recording 82 saves.
The freshman from Liberal was instrumental in Barton’s strong finish to the season. The Cougars finished the 2017 regular season going 6-1-1 to earn a spot in the Region VI post season.
During that stretch, the Cougars defense, anchored by Gonzalez, gave up just seven goals. Gonzalez had 35 saves to just six goals in the games she played. She sat out a pair of easy wins during that stretch.
Joining Gonzalez on the All West team were seven more freshmen and one sophomore as Barton occupied nine of the 17 second team spots.
The lone sophomore earning recognition Kirsty Ashworth of England, who was picked at both midfield and defender on the second team.
The Cougars had four players selected as second team forwards. Larissa Fagundes, Raley Mantz, Sydney Sulzman and Jessica Simental were all picks as second team forwards.
Fagundes led Barton with 14 goals during the season. She also led the team with six assists and 34 points. Simental had seven goals, Mantz six and Sulzman three.
Joining Ashworth in the midfield was Ariadna Ramirez and in the backline were Johanna Behrens and Alma Garay.
Cloud coach Jaime Ross was the Coach of the Year while Adrijane Felix of Northwest Tech was the Offensive Player of the Year and Ingrid Castro of Cloud was the Defensive Player of the Year.
