Teresa Wade has put up some stand-out numbers during her freshman campaign as part of the No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Commmunity College volleyball team.
Wade, who was a product of Class 1A Division-I perennial powerhouse St. John High School, was selected as the NJCAA Region VI Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
“It feels really good,” Wade said. “I was kind of surprised because I wasn’t expecting it at all. I have to give thanks to the coaches. They’ve made me better all year, and my teammates that push me every day in practice.”
Wade leads the Lady Dragons in kills with 376, and is second in digs with 315.
“Coach (Patrick) Hall told me that colleges don’t want a hitter that can only hit,” Wade said. “You have to play defense, so that’s something we’ve worked on.”
Those numbers may be subject to change as Hutchinson’s season isn’t over yet.
The Lady Dragons are the No. 10 seed in the national tournament, which starts on Thursday, Nov. 15. They challenge North Idaho College at 11 a.m. in West Plains, Mo.
Hutchinson head coach Patrick Hall was selected Coach of the Year, an award he won last season with Barton before taking the job at Hutchinson.
