EMPORIA — The Barton Community College women’s golf team stormed back into the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference race on Sunday as the Lady Cougars carded a 25-stroke victory in Conference Meet No. 5 held at the Emporia Golf Course.
Originally scheduled for 27 holes, weather conditions prevented the teams from finishing the final nine holes, giving the Lady Cougars the shortened meet victory.
Sophomore Maddie Sherman won her first collegiate tournament, firing an 84 as Barton took the top three spots in a conference tournament for the first time in school history.
“It’s the best we’ve done in a long time,” Barton head coach Doug Kaiser said. “Our next tournament is on Monday and Tuesday in Salina, then we have the (NCAA) Region VI Tournament.
“In the region tournament, we take the top 10 golfers to Florida for the national tournament. If this had been the regional tournament, we’d be taking six golfers to nationals.”
Natthakan Teeratrakul’s 85 was one stroke behind the leader, while Conference Meet No. 4 Champion Kaylee Crawford finished in third with a 90.
Barton shot a combined 354 with Dodge City, whose No. 1 player did not compete, finishing in second place with a 379 and Colby’s 413 placed it in third.
