Jayhawk Conference

Barton Community College’s Kara Koepplin won her first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference meet on Monday at StoneRidge Golf Cub.
She took the individual title, shooting 130 to lead the Lady Cougars to a first-place finish.
Koepplin edged Dodge City’s Annie Sheridan, who led the field after the 18-hole first round on Sunday. Sheridan took second at 131.
“Annie’s won every meet so far this year, but Kara snuck in and beat her,” Kaiser said. “That made her day something special. That’s the first time she’s won a tournament.”
As a team, Barton tallied a combined 559, beating second-place Dodge City by 31 strokes.
Kaiser attributes his team’s dominance to a wake-up call in their last meet, where Dodge City beat Barton for the first time this season.
“We won the conference in the fourth meet, and then we went to Salina and got beat,” Kaiser said. “The girls were confident because we won the conference, and I told them they needed to bear down.
“I told them we needed to get our ‘A’ game back on, and I think they did.”
The Lady Cougars had six players in the top 10 — Kaylee Crawford in third (140), Blakelee Cooper in fourth (144) and Maddie Sherman, Staisha Miller and Kaylee Rudolph all tied for sixth (145).
The regular season is over for Barton, which competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region VI tournament on Sunday and Monday at Carey Park in Hutchinson.
“They take the top 10 out of that group to the national tournament,” Kaiser said, “so hopefully we can get six girls in there again.”
