PARK CITY — There was definitely no quit in the Barton women’s basketball team. The Cougars had a monumental effort in the Region VI quarterfinals against the No. 2 team in the nation.
The Cougars spent the game in pursuit of Hutchinson. Every time it looked like Hutch was going to pull away, Barton would come back. But the task of taking out the No. 2 in the nation proved too much for the Cougars.
Hutchinson moved into the semifinals with a 63-44 win over the Cougars, ending Barton’s season at 17-15.
An early 11-0 run gave the Blue Dragons a 14-3 lead in the opening quarter. But Barton battled back with the final four points of the first quarters and first four points of the second period.
That made it a 20-16 contest.
Then came another big Blue Dragon run. Barton did not score for nearly eight minutes as Hutchinson went on a 13-0 run to take a commanding 33-16 lead. Barton whittled that to 33-21 by half.
That was, again, the beginning of another rally. Barton trimmed the Hutchinson lead to single digits, 41-33 late in the third. Hutch took a 44-35 lead to the final period.
Barton wasn’t able to get any closer than eight in the final period. The Blue Dragons finally pulled away in the game’s final six minutes on the back of another 11-0 run.
Playing in their final games as a Cougar, sophomores Jalisa Jones and Katrina Roenfeldt scored 10 and nine to pace Barton. Sophomore Baylee Robinson had nine rebounds and Roenfeldt four assists.
Hutchinson was led by Kirea Rogers with 18. Rogers also led Hutch with seven rebounds and five steals. Inja Butina dished out 10 assists to pace the Blue Dragons.
The Blue Dragons will take on Cowley in semifinal action Tuesday. Cowley knocked off the third seed Butler, 84-77. The Tigers were led by Rhianna Lang with 24 points. Butler’s Kendriana Washington finished with 21.
In the top half of the bracket, top seeded Seward County rolled to a 57-33 win over Independence to secure its spot in the semifinals. Seward blew the game open with a 17-4 second quarter to take a 39-13 lead to halftime.
Mollie Mounsey led three Saints in double figures with 16 points. Seward will play in the 3 pm semifinal Tuesday against Cloud County.
Cloud took control of a close game with a big third quarter against Coffeyville, winning 82-62. The fifth seeded Thunderbirds used a 25-12 third to take a 12-point lead into the final period. Cloud continued the onslaught in the final period as well, 23-15.
Chelcie Kizart led the T-Birds with 22 while Shannon Owen added 15. Lucy Burke led Coffeyville with 20.
Seward and Cloud will play the 3 pm semifinal.
