In spite of a strong start by Southwestern (Iowa) Community College, the Barton women’s basketball team was able to take a lead midway through the first half.
The Lady Cougars remained in the lead for a 60-43 victory to start the Best Western/Cougars Booster Club Classic on Friday night at Kirkman Activity Center.
“We came out flat right away, and never really snapped out of it,” Barton head coach Carter Kruger said. “We were able to do enough things, we were a little more talented than they are, so that helped.
“When we want to play, we have a team that can guard anybody in the country. That’s if we’re fired up, which we obviously weren’t.”
Southwestern took an 8-0 lead before Barton’s Ta’Kerra Williams dropped in a layup two minutes into the game.
The Lady Cougars finally overtook the Lady Spartans with an 11-0 run.
Williams got Barton started with a layup, followed by Blair Bloomfield making one of two free throws.
Williams completed a three-point play, and Payton Scheer made a pair of free throws.
Ashton Bruner sliced to the basket for a layup and got fouled, completing a three-point play.
Bruner and Williams each finished with a double-double.
Williams scored a team-leading 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Bruner finished with 11 points and 11 boards.
“They got a lot of offensive rebounds, and made some layups,” Kruger said of Williams and Bruner. “They’re two kids that they need to keep getting better. They’re not anywhere where they need to be yet, but they’re working hard. They’re getting there.”
