The Barton Community College women’s tennis team began its season over the weekend in Oklahoma City, but rain kept them from finishing the competition.
When the Lady Cougars won their home-opening dual against Hesston on Wednesday, the dual also became their season opener. Barton won 8-1, losing one singles match due to an injury default.
“We started the season over the weekend in Oklahoma,” BCC head coach Lyle Stickney said. “We played on Friday, but we got rained out on Saturday, so we got a few matches in, but we didn’t get to finish. We’re 1-0 now, I guess.”
The dual also opened Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play for the Lady Cougars.
“This also opens the Jayhawk juco schedule for us, so I’m pretty happy with the win,” Stickney said. “We’re alright. I’m seeing some really good things out there. I’m not uncomfortable with where we’re playing. We’re going to run into some pretty good teams. There’ll be some international players when we get to the top, but we’re doing all right.”
Barton’s No. 1 doubles duo, Michelle Miller and Shalee Myers, took care of Hesston’s No. 1 doubles team, which consisted of Erika Wedel and Kaci Diener, 8-1.
Miller, the team’s No. 1 singles player as well, beat Wedel head-to-head 6-1, 6-4.
“Michelle’s a freshman, but she has some unique skills,” Stickney said. “She hits the ball a ton, much to my chagrin. You know, I’d like for her to tone it down, but when she sees a shot, she likes to hit the ball as hard as humanly possible.”
No. 2 singles player Myers faced Diener and won 6-3, 6-3.
