TUCSON, Ariz. — The Barton Community College women’s tennis team returns home from Arizona with an individual consolation title at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I tennis championships this week.
The team was tied for 15th place with Itawamba at 11.5 points after Day 4 of the competition, which concludes today.
Gentry McLeland, an Ellinwood product, captured the No. 6 singles consolation title while all three doubles teams suffered defeats in Wednesday’s consolation semifinals.
McLeland won her consolation title by blanking Josie Masinelli of Lewis & Clark, 8-0, and then received the title via the withdrawal of her championship-match opponent due to injury.
Barton’s No. 1 doubles team, comprised of Karina Ono and Michelle Miller, along with the No. 2 doubles team (Darrien Beckwith and Aspen McCann) and the No. 3 doubles team (Jaime Christiansen and McLeland) were all eliminated on Wednesday in their respective semifinal round of the consolation bracket.
Miller (No. 2 singles) and Christiansen (No. 5 singles) were eliminated from a singles consolation bracket on Tuesday in a quarterfinal match.
Ono (No. 1 singles), Beckwith (No. 3 singles) and McCann (No. 4 singles) each won their first-round singles matches to advance to the finals bracket’s round of 16. All three were eliminated in the second round.
