HUTCHINSON 49, BARTON 39 — The No. 1 ranked Hutchinson Community College women outscored Barton Community College 27-12 on 3-pointers to outlast the Cougars 49-39 in Friday's Region 6 basketball semifinal.
The Cougars (22-10) have qualified for the semifinals six straight times and had reached the Region 6 championship game the past four years.
Hutchinson (32-0) is assured of an NJCAA Tournament berth even if the Blue Dragons don't win Saturday's Region 6 championship.
The Cougars led by 10 points and 15-10 after one quarter. But the Dragons regained control with a 20-point second period for a 30-22 halftime lead they never lost.
"Offensively, we had good movement the first quarter and scored on two or three inbounds plays," said Barton coach Alan Clark. "After that, we got stagnant and started standing around. Credit Hutchinson's defense for some of that. We didn't shoot it very well, 4 of 20 on 3-pointers."
Barton's twin towers performed at a consistent level. Vera Ojenuwa contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds. Vivian Onugha scored nine points with 12 rebounds. The other Cougars converted 8 of 30 field goals (27%).
The Dragons held the Cougars to 16 of 53 shooting (30%) and 4 of 20 (20%) from 3-point range.
"We had a good time crashing the boards and getting offensive rebounds," Clark said. "Vera had a hard time getting the ball in the basket. Quezia (Bertoni) had a tough time finishing. It was one of those games."
Hutchinson (32-0) converted 9 of 21 shots from 3-point range. Reserve Bree Hornya made a trio of 3-pointers and scored 11 points. Journey Armstead scored 10 points. The Dragons scored 27 points on 3-pointers and 16 points on 2-pointers.
"They made enough of them," Clark said "We left Kiki Smith open twice and she hit two 3s. Armstead hit two threes. Hornya made three 3-pointers
