No. 1 seed Avila, Mo. cruises in KCAC softball

KCAC champion Avila, Mo. cruised past the York College Panthers 4-0 in Thursday's KCAC Softball Championship at the Great Bend Sports Complex. Avila pitcher Kayleigh Behymer (14-5) yielded three hits with four strikeouts.

Avila (27-14, 20-4) led 2-0 when Mia Moreno singled home Kelsei Davis and MaKenzie Musgrove scored on a first-inning error. Cierra McGee doubled home courtesy runner Reagan Eastabrooks after Moreno's third-inning double. McGee scored on an error for a 4-0 lead. 

Tabor College won last year’s KCAC Tournament Championship with a 5-1 victory over Ottawa.

OTTAWA 2, TABOR 1

Pinch runner Maddi Brown scored on Kori Lacey's game-winning groundball to spark Ottawa (25-18) past defending champion Tabor 2-1 in nine innings. Ottawa's Sierra Rettele doubled and Tomi Lyn Hickman bunted Rettele to third base off pitcher Madison Byrd.

Tabor's Cassidy Stevens homered off winning pitcher Brandi Carter in the second inning, Lacey's second-inning single scored Shaylea Kaeo after back-to-back singles by Kaeo and Hickman.

FRIENDS 5, BETHANY 2

Shelby Belloni scored two runs and pitcher Hali Walters (16-11) worked seven solid innings as Friends downed Bethany 5-2.

Belloni's double scored Isabella Gonzalez and Kylie Fox's second-inning triple scored Belloni for a 2-0 lead. Hannah Long's sacrifice fly scored Cassie Jones for a 3-0 lead. Bethany's Courtney Fudge singled home Hannah Price and Briana Rodriguez scored on an error for a 3-2 score.

Kat Davis singled home Belloni and Kat Davis scored on a fifth-inning wild pitch for a 5-2 decision. 

MCPHERSON 3, KANSAS WESLEYAN 1

Slugger Maile Deutsch drilled a two-run sixth-inning homer as KCAC co-champion McPherson (32-14, 20-4) edged Kansas Wesleyan (18-23) 3-1. McPherson pitcher Christie Betker (16-8) struck out five batters.

McPherson's Jessica Jones reached on a first-inning error and scored on an error for a 1-0 lead. Deutsch's homer made it 3-0. Anna Grace Williams drove home Taylor Lagrange on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.
