TYLER, Texas — The Barton Community College’s men’s soccer team played a hard-fought game against NJCAA national tournament host Tyler, but fell short, losing 3-0.
The game remained scoreless until the final 20 minutes when the Apaches broke through Barton’s defense and scored.
Barton head coach Oliver Twelvetrees said the goal shouldn’t have counted.
“The game was scoreless until the 70th minute,” Twelvetrees said. “We didn’t get a foul we contested and they were offsides on the play. Things just didn’t go our way.”
Even though the score doesn’t reflect it, Twelvetrees said the game was very close.
“We played a really hard-fought game,” Twelvetrees said. “Tyler is a very strong team and they will probably be the national champion (today). We just didn’t have things work out for us.”
Kevin Ellis was the player fouled when Tyler scored its first goal. Ellis was injured and had to sit out for the rest of the game.
“After the first goal, it was just really hard to come back,” Twelvetrees said. “We lost our first two choices at center-back. Italo (Arcelino) got injured at the 15th minute and Kevin had to move back to defense. Then we lost him.”
Ellis will be able to play in the third-place game today against No. 2-ranked Monroe. Arcelino, who is out with a knee injury, will not be playing.
The Cougars will also welcome back their top goal-scorer, Ricardo Yeverino, today. Yeverino faced a two-game suspension for the red card he received during the Plains District championship.
“We should be better (today),” Twelvetrees said. “We’ll have Kevin back and we’ll have Ritchie back as well.
“Monroe is a big team. We’ll definitely have our hands full, but we’ll hopefully be better.”
