No. 6 Cougars slay Dragons
HUTCHINSON – No. 6 Barton Community College roared ahead with 11 and 12-point scoring runs to bury No. 14 ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons 102-80 in Wednesday’s Jayhawk Conference basketball showdown.
Jayhawk Conference co-leader Barton (16-1, 10-1 Jayhawk) led by as many as 27 points to sweep its seventh consecutive game while Hutchinson (14-3, 9-2 Jayhawk) had a 4-game winning streak snapped.
“That’s definitely a big win on the road,” said Barton coach Jeremy Coombs.
Keandre Kindell scored 22 points in 20 minutes to lead the Cougars. Hutchinson native Myles Thompson scored 19 points with 10 rebounds for his fourth double/double. Cooper Jackson scored 14 points with six steals. Christian Bowen-Webb chipped in 11 points and Lajae Jones finished with 10 points. The Cougars dominated the paint 56-28 and bench points 51-22.
The Cougars shot 54% (35 of 65) with 6 of 13 from the 3-point line and 26 of 34 from the foul line.
“Kindell is quick and athletic and can shoot the ball,” Coombs said. “Kindell stepped up. Cooper (Jackson) had a good night.”
John Paul Ricks led the Blue Dragons with a career-high 22 points, 11 boards and five assists. Dre Weathers scored 17 points with nine rebounds. Kobe Smith scored 14 points. Barton’s Ring Malith held leading scorer Kamryn Thomas (15.5 ppg) to nine points.
“Ring did a great job. At 6-9, he’s a hard guy to go against,” Coombs said. “Our main focus was slowing down Thomas and we did a good job. We hang out hat on defense.”
The Blue Dragons shot 38% (25 of 67), going 5 of 27 from 3-point range and 25 of 30 from the foul line. Barton controlled the boards 43-34.
Barton built a 25-12 lead on a 12-0 run after Thompson’s 3-point play. The Cougars roared ahead 42-22 with an 11-0 run in 86 seconds. Barton shot 51.5% in the first half.
The Dragons sliced the lead to 92-76 on a Weathers dunk. Again, Barton closed with a 9-0 scoring burst.
The Cougars rattling off 12 straight points to build a 25-12 advantage. A 60-second 11-point stretch led to a 42-22 edge and a 47-28 halftime margin. Jones scored four points and Kindell's steal, layup and 3-point play led to a 7-point trip. Kindell converted a bonus free throw on an intentional foul and Bowen-Webb drilled a 3-pointer.
Cougar reserves Fawaz Surakat and Kindell scored consecutive buckets for a 76-49 lead.
