Barton Community College opened its new facility on Saturday with the Barton Invitational track and field meet.
Barton head coach Dave Scheneck said that the meet was intended to be a test run for running track meets in the future.
“We weren’t really keeping team scores because we were really just testing the new facility out,” Scheneck said. “Maybe in the future we’ll do some things that are more team related, but now we were just making sure that we could host a meet.
“It went off without a hitch.”
The meet technically started on Friday with the hammer throw, featuring Marcela Solano, who currently leads the NJCAA in the event.
Solano reached a distance of 191 feet, putting her 11 feet, four inches ahead of second-place Christa Bergman from Fort Hays State.
Solano’s throw broke the BCC record of 183-3, according to Scheneck.
“She didn’t just break the school record, she shattered it,” Scheneck said. “That throw qualifies her for the South American Championships and I think she has a 20- to 22-foot lead over second place in the NJCAA.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg for her. She has lots of potential and we have plans for her in the future.”
Everett Walker turned in the top time in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line at 21.11 seconds.
Carmetrick Ross took first place in both the men’s high jump and long jump.
Ross reached 25-0 1/2 in the long jump and 6-10 1/4 in the high jump.
“Ross had a very consitent day in the long jump,” Scheneck said. “He is currently the national leader in the long jump. He (reached a personal record) in the high jump. To be honest, we don’t work on the high jump very much, but he did a very good job today.”
