It was over before it started. Well, almost.

The Barton women’s basketball team took the suspense out of its Jayhawk Conference home opener by closing out the first quarter on a 17-0 run that would eventually reach 21-0 early in the second period.

That would catapult the Cougars to a 102-45 win over Allen County Saturday afternoon at the Barton Gym.

Barton evened its Jayhawk mark at 1-1 with the win and is 2-1 overall. Allen is still looking for its first win, now 0-2 and 0-4.

The contest started as many do, as Barton led 4-2 after Allen scored a bucket three minutes in.

Then the Cougars delivered the knockout blow.

Lyndi Rumford came off the bench to hit a trey get things going. Another Rumford 3-pointer made it 12-2 and extended the run to 8-0.

Vanessa Odauh closed out the 17-0 run in the opening period with a layup off a steal by Tiffany Dortland for a 21-2.

A Dortland layup and Queen Ulabo jumper capped the 21-0 run and gave the Cougars a 25-2 lead 50 seconds into the second period.

Game over.

The lead hit 30 on a Ulabo layup late in the second quarter and by half it was 53-17.

Barton’s lead eventually hit 40 in the final frame and a Rumford free throw with 1:00 to play put the Cougars’ at the century mark.

Ulabo led four Cougars in double figures with a career-high 30 points, surpassing the 28 points she scored in a 102-92 win over Neosho County last season – the last time Barton topped 100.

Dortland was close behind with a career-high of her own, netting 25, which strangely enough came in the same win over Neosho. In that game Dortland hit 7 3-pointers. In this win the Russell sophomore was 0-for-2. This time it was a 10-of-14 effort from the field that propelled her to the career mark.

Dortland also had eight assists and six steals. Oduah finished with seven assists.

Rumford scored 14 off the bench for her best outing in just three career games while Mariah Johnson added 11.

The Cougars will continue their jaunt through the Eastern side of the Jayhawk with a trip to Ark City Wednesday to take on Cowley.

The Tigers are off to an uncharacteristic 0-2 start in the conference with close losses to Garden City and Seward County. Cowley lost 71-70 in Ark City Wednesday then fell at Seward, 93-81, Saturday.

Tip will be at 5:30 in Scott Auditorium.
