The bracket is set for the second phase of the Region VI Baseball Championships.
Among the eight teams headed to Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita this weekend are the Barton Cougars.
The Cougars, the No. 2 seed in the event, will take on the No. 7 seed and traditional baseball power Johnson County. That game will take place Friday at 1 pm.
Overall, six of the eight favorites survived the opening round best 2-of-3 series, including the top seeds in No. 1 Cowley and second-seeded Barton.
The two upsets were rather large, however. The No. 3 and 4 seeds were both beaten. Jayhawk East runner-up Fort Scott was ousted by Seward County while Jayhawk West runner-up Butler was swept by Kansas City Kansas.
Two of the eight series went a full three games before a winner was determined.
One of those was Barton’s next opponent, Johnson. The Cavaliers, the seventh seed, lost the first game 10-4 to 10th seed Cloud County. But Johnson came back to win 11-1 and 17-12 to advance to Wichita. In series-clinching win, Johnson scored seven times in the bottom of the eighth to rally for the win.
The other 3-game series saw No. 8 Hutchinson rally after dropping the opener to No. 9 Coffeyville. Hutch lost 6-1 Friday then came back Saturday for a 7-2 win. The rubber match on Sunday saw Hutch rally from a 3-1 deficit in the final inning, winning in walk-off fashion by a 4-3 margin.
In the other two opening series No. 5 and 6 seeds Neosho and Colby swept their opponents.
Play will started Friday with the four first round games, starting at 10 am.
