The whirlwind of a summer continues for new Barton Community College athletic director Trevor Rolfs.
Besides hiring coaches at Barton, along with renovation projects on campus, he also has been busy making the daily commute back and forth from his former home in Pratt, approximately 50 miles from Great Bend.
Rolfs won’t have to drive as far now because he and his wife, Kim, moved into a house with their kids in Claflin a couple days ago.
“We moved into a house there,” he said. “We plan to buy a farm in the near future, and we want our kids — (daughter) Taylor and (son)Trey — to go to school in the Central Plains district.”
Longtime area schools Quivira Heights and Claflin have merged together, beginning in the coming days. Central Plains elementary is located in Holyrood, the middle school is located in Bushton and the high school is located in Claflin.
High school football on Friday nights has always been on Rolfs’ agenda, even though he has been busy the past seven years as the Pratt men’s basketball coach, including the past few years as the juco’s assistant athletic director.
Rolfs has also been officiating football the last five years, including the Mid-Central Activities Association, the Western Athletic Conference and even some Eight-Man games, to name just a few.
“I got into officiating football around five years ago with a crew out of Pratt,” Rolfs said. “We get to officiate games in a number of conferences.
“But I’m not scheduled for a Great Bend game this year.”
With his son playing youth football and beginning his new AD job, Rolfs, a former KCAC football player at Bethany College, has decided to drop his KCAC officiating tasks on Saturdays this fall.
