It was one minute and 30 seconds that changed the outcome.
The Barton women’s soccer team was looking at defeat Wednesday at Dodge City. With just more than 10 minutes to play in the game the Cougars trailed by one.
Then Maddison Schofield took over. The freshman sensation scored twice in the span of 1:28 to turn defeat into a 3-2 win over the Conquistadors.
The win wrapped up a playoff berth for the Cougars and put them on the cusp of the third seed from the Jayhawk West in the post season.
That would put Barton at either Johnson County or Coffeyville in first round action.
Barton is now 8-5-1 overall and 5-3 in the Jayhawk West. In the western half of Region VI, the Cougars are 7-4. Dodge City is 6-7 overall and 4-6 in the region.
At Dodge Wednesday, Barton took an early lead when Megan Martinez scored 14 minutes into the contest for a 1-0 lead.
Dodge City took a 2-1 lead to halftime as Rawaa Ismail and Siobhan Longmore both scored goals in the opening half.
That is where the game stayed until the late stages when Schofield took over.
Schofield evened the score at 2-all with a 25-yarder to the near post for her 13th goal of the season. Martinez and Hannah Knaak set up the shot for Schofield with 10:55 left in the game.
Schofield put the game winner in the net with 9:27 to play on an assist from Kirsty Ashworth. Ashworth got the rebound off her corner kick and put the ball back in the box where Schofield headed it into the net for the game-winner.
Barton will wrap up the regular season at home Saturday when Northwest Tech pays a visit to the Barton Sports Complex for a 1 pm kickoff.
