Scoring was not an issue for the Barton women’s basketball team in its season opener Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.
It wasn’t an issue for Jaylin Stapleton either. The freshman from Meade made her debut for Barton by pouring in 30 points.
The Cougars hit the century mark as they rolled to a 102-70 win over the Kansas Wesleyan JV to tip off the 2017-18 campaign.
The outcome was never really in doubt after the Cougars jumped to a 24-11 lead on the way to a 27-17 advantage after one period.
But in the early stages of the second half, the Coyotes were still hanging around, down just 54-44 three minutes into the third period.
It was at the point the Cougars began to pull away. Barton went on a 9-2 run to push the led to 17 points and coasted to the win from there. By the end of the third period, Barton had a lead of 23 points, scoring 30 in that third period.
It was a solid debut for Stapleton. The all-state guard hit 9-of-14 shots the floor, including 4-of-5 on 3-pointers to go along with 8-of-10 from the free throw line. She also had three steals.
She was joined in double figures by Uruguay freshman Natasha Dolinksy with 15, sophomore Juliana Chagas with 11 and freshman Taylor Regan with 10. Regan, from Otis-Bison, led the Cougars with nine rebound and three blocks. Chagas had five assists.
Wesleyan was led by Courtney Brockhoff with 26.
Barton is at home this weekend for the Best Western/Booster Club Classic. The Cougars will face Redlands (Okla) and Northern Oklahoma-Enid Saturday. Both tips are slated for 5:30 p.m.
