SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE

LARNED – The Hillsboro Lady Trojans used a 21-2 first-quarter for a 55-32 Central Kansas League basketball victory over the Larned girls.

Hillsboro (11-7, 5-2) made 20 of 41 field goals and 9 of 10 free throws. Savannah Shahan scored 22 points and Zaylee Werth added 13.

Larned made 11 of 44 field goals. They converted 8 of 12 free throws. Kiana Meyer scored 10 points, eight in the second quarter. Akielah Collins added six and Abby Holt five.

Larned (2-15, 0-7) plays Hesston Friday.

Larned recovered in the second quarter and outscored Hillsboro 17-13 to pull within 34-19 at halftime but could never get closer. Werth and Shahan controlled the tempo of the game. The 6-0 Werth and 5-11 Shahan controlled the boards and frequently got in the paint for easy baskets.

“We got a lot of energy from our bench,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. “Our starters didn’t play with much energy and, thus, couldn’t score, falling behind 19-2. Kianna Meyer and Abby Holt helped us make somewhat of a comeback in that second quarter.”

Larned fell behind 46-25 at the third quarter mark as they made only one field goal out of 12 shots during the critical quarter. The Lady Indians’ shooting woes continued in the fourth quarter as they finished the half with three field goals.

No. 1Trojans roll past Indians

BY BUDDY TABLER

SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE

LARNED – No. 1 ranked 2A Hillsboro was as good as advertised as they steamrolled the Larned Indians 60-24 in Tuesday’s Central Kansas League basketball showdown.

Smarting from a one-point loss to Hesston on Friday, the Trojans were sharp and ready to put that game behind them.

Hillsboro (7-1, 6-1) made 23 of 44 field goals for 52%. Grayson Ratzlaff finished the night with 19 points. Brekyn Ratzlaff added 13 and Matt Potucek had 9, leaving him just 2 points short of the magical 1,000 career point mark.

Larned (4-13, 2-5) made 10 of 31 field goals for 32% and converted 3 of 8 free throws. Cade Colglazier scored 8 points. Brady Hope four and Carlos Ibarra three. The Indians play league-leading Hesston on Friday evening.

“That’s an outstanding basketball team,” said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. “They are extremely tough to score on. We knew we would have to play perfect basketball to hang with them. Obviously, we didn’t do that. That is a team that should contend for a state championship.”

Hillsboro jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back as they raced to a 15-4 first-quarter lead and then outscored Larned 20-7 in the second quarter to take a 35-11 halftime edge, ending any doubt about the outcome. The 6-7 Grayson Ratzlaff poured in 16 first-half points in a dominating performance.

A full-court, man-to-man press bothered the Indians and caused 27 turnovers, limiting the Indians chances to score. Hillsboro pushed its margin to 49-18 at the end of the third quarter as the Trojans continued to shoot the ball well from the field.
