Panthers qualify boys, girls

LAKE BARTON — The Great Bend Panthers proved home-field advantage counts in cross country too.

Third-place medalists Kaiden Esfeld (16:55.21) and Emilia Diaz (20:06.78) led the Panthers to third-place finishes that clinched 5A state cross country berths at Lawrence’s Rim Rock Farms. Runners were greeted by perfect windless conditions on a dry course suited for speed.

It marks the first time since 2012 that the Panther boys and girls both qualified for the state meet.

“It’s a great day when your boys and girls qualify for state cross country,” said Great Bend coach Lyles Lashley. “The guys maybe started out too hard and that them their times. It’s all about surviving to get to state. Getting Collin Hammond back this week helped the boys. Our girls really ran the second half of the course well. The girls ran really well and improved in the second half of that race.”

BOYS – Ninth-grader Esfeld led the way with a solid start-to-finish run behind Maize South medalist Trey Rios (16:31.71). Panther Sage Cauley was seventh medalist (17:10.35), Evan Hammond eighth (17:11.45) and Alex Smith 19th (17:48.04) and 20th place Collin Hammond (17:49.72) counting the team scores. Matthew Huslig (18:44.32) also qualified for 5A state.

“The race went pretty well. We went out a little fast, then got to where we wanted,” Esfeld said. “I started my kick with about 600 yards left. I held it really good except for maybe the last 50 yards. We got what we wanted – a top three finish. The running conditions were the best we’ve seen all year. It was a perfect temperature and no wind.”

Cauley backed up Esfeld with a typical solid performance.

“It was a very nice day – everything was perfect. The course was really nice today,” Cauley said. “We were a bit behind where we wanted to be, but we ran good. We stuck together really well as a team today.”

Maize South (42), Newton (54) and Great Bend (57) are 5A team qualifiers.

GIRLS – Diaz ran a smooth race to finish third behind Maize South medalist Alexa Rios, Maize South (19:18.12). McKenna Esfeld placed eighth (20:45.29); Emma Loomis ninth (20:47.79); Haley McCormick, 15th (21:15.84) and Hannah Loomis, 28th (22:13.16) to count in the team score. August Siefkes (22:51.71) is also a state qualifier.

“The race went really smooth and the weather was nice,” Diaz said. “About the 2K mark, I felt really great. At the 3K mark, I knew I had to finish strong. This was one of my best races of the year. Just knowing the course from point-to-point really helps us. We finished strong.”

Maize South (36), Maize High (61) and Great Bend (62) are 5A team qualifiers.

CLASS 2A — Stanton County’s girls snapped Ellinwood’s 10-year streak of winning regionals, but the Eagles (67) smartly qualified with a third-place finish behind Stanton County (26) and Oakley (60).

Ellinwood’s Erin Hammeke placed third (19:21.13) to finish behind Trego medalist Sybil Giefer (19:04.77). Ellinwood’s other state qualifiers are 12th-place Ashtin Klepper (22:10.77); 19th place Brooklin Morgan (23:26.61); 32nd Alicia Mitchell (26:01.46); 34th Gracie Schlessiger (26:31.76); and 43rd Daphne Doll (31:32.69).

“We’re excited about the way the girls competed,” said Ellinwood coach Andrew Cherry. “Erin ran well to finish third. Ashtin had a tough race, but kept battling. Brooklin Morgan ran a great race and Alicia Mitchell had a good race. You’re always happy to qualify for the state meet. We hope to challenge for a state trophy. There are things to work for next week at Wamego.”

Ellinwood’s Asher Miller just missed qualifying with a 12th-place finish.

“Asher ran with a side-stitch and a couple guys came around him,” Cherry said. “He had a good shot, but the numbers didn’t work out. He’ll come back next year hungry to make the state meet. We love the Lake Barton course. It’s a true cross country course. Coach Lashley and his staff have done a tremendous job.”BOYS RESULTS
