DODGE CITY – For one of the rare times this season, little went right for the Great Bend boys basketball team.
Dodge City was firing in 3-pointers. No one besides Sage Koelsch made a first-half field goal. Most of the block-charge calls generally went Dodge City’s way with Panther Joseph Moeder finding a tough time getting a call.
Dodge City coasted to a 69-42 Western Athletic Conference basketball victory over the cold-shooting Panthers. After a Panther was bumped on an apparent shooting foul, Great Bend coach Kyle Kreigh had seen enough, drawing a technical foul trying to back his team.
There wasn’t Kriegh could do on a night with 30 percent shooting plagued by 20 turnovers. Koelsch scored 11 points with Carter Coombs (9) and Stefan Spray (8) chipping in. The Panthers made 3 of 14 first-half field goals, all by Koelsch. Coombs converted his final two 3-pointers. Spray worked for nine free throws, and made four of them.
“Our focus and execution wasn’t there,” Kreigh said. “Outside of our Kapaun-Mt. Carmel game, we hadn’t had a game like this. Dodge City has good athletes who do a good job. It was a tough night.”
Dodge City's Dawson Taylor (17) and Isaiah Taylor (12) scored in double figures as the Red Demons (16-2, 5-1) secured the runner-up spot in the WAC. The Red Demons converted 8 of 20 3-pointers to outscore the Panthers 24-9 from long range. The Red Demons made 19 free throws and 21 of 45 field goals.
Koelsch started the second half with a 3-pointr and Stefan Spray followed with back-to-back baskets for a 33-23 deficit. Dodge City responded with 3-pointers by Cooper Scheck and Dan Sanchez and 10 third-quarter points by Dawson Taylor for a 52-31 lead after three quarters.
