HAYSVILLE – Every day, the Great Bend Bat Cats discover a new way to lose a baseball game.
Haysville edged Great Bend 11-10 on an error as the Bat Cats dropped their fourth one-run Jayhawk League game. The Bat Cats (6-7, 1-6 Jayhawk) have led four games they’ve lost by one run.
Haysville’s Garrett McCarthy scored the game-winning run on an eighth-inning error. Haysville pitcher Marco Gutierrez picked off the tying runner Reece Johnson off second base in the ninth inning.
Free bases and errors hurt the Bat Cats. Four Haysville runners scored after reaching base on a walk or hit by pitch. Three errors led to three unearned runs.
Great Bend’s Chris Swanberg singled home Austin McNicholas for a 1-0 lead.
But three walks and an error led to a six-run Haysville inning. Carter Cross delivered a two-run single and Zach Nogalski doubled home two runs for a 7-1 lead after three innings.
Great Bend rallied with eight runs for a 9-7 lead. McNicholas singled home Seth Gerardy, Thomas Alexander scored on a wild pitch and Swanberg’s sacrifice fly scored McNicholas in a three-run fourth inning.
Alexander singled home Gerardy, Blaine Ray singled in Brendan Madsen and Alexander and Swanberg singled home Reece Johnson for an 8-7 lead after five innings. Gerardy scored on an error for 9-7 lead.
Haysville’s Luke Jacketa doubled home two runs for a 9-9 tie after six innings.
Zack Berohn’s single scored Reece Johnson, but Haysville tied it 10-10 on Shea Gutierrez’s seventh-inning single.
