HAYS-TMP 69, HOISINGTON 67

BELOIT — Hoisington's heartbreaking ending illustrated the thrill of victory changing into the agony of defeat. Bralen Thompson's 3-pointer handed the Cardinals a 67-66 lead over Hays-Thomas More Prep with 6.7 seconds left. 

But the Monarchs' Lucas Lang delivered the game-winning 3-pointer off an assist by Jackson Schulte as time expired for a 69-67 victory in the 3A Beloit basketball substate. The Monarchs benefited when officials added 2.5 seconds to the clock after Thompson's basket.

The Cardinals (17-5) rallied from a 12-point deficit at 55-43. Holt Hanzlick converted a pair of 3-pointers and Mason Haxton and Thompson converted fourth-quarter 3-pointers in a 24-point fourth quarter.

Haxton led the Cardinals with a career high 27 points and Drew Nicholson added 20 points. TMP's 6-foot-7 Carson Jacobs scored 24 points and Ryan Stoecklein added 15 points.

The Cardinals led 22-19 with six minutes left in the half. The Monarchs ended the half on a 15-6 scoring burst. Stoecklein bombed home four first-half 3-pointers to spark a 21-point second period. Stoecklein and Jacobs each scored 14 first-half points. The Monarchs outscored the Cardinals 15-0 on 3-pointers the first half.

DODGE CITY — St. John's Marshall Woolf rescued the Tigers with 15 points as they rallied past Kiowa County 40-34 in Thursday's 1A Dodge City basketball substate. Woolf converted two key 3-pointers and scored 11 second-half points.

The Tigers converted 7 of 26 free throws, but Eli Delp made two clinching free throws and Marshall Woolf added a free throw for a 37-34 lead. Eli Delp and Tanner Halling made clutch fourth-quarter baskets. Halling finished with 10 points.

The Tigers (20-3) trailed by seven points before outscoring the Mavericks by 13 points. The Tigers play in Saturday's championship game.

Kiowa County led 18-13 at halftime. The Mavericks started hot as Luke Ballard converted four 3-pointers and scored 13 first-half points. The Mavericks led 15-8 by holding the Tigers scoreless for seven minutes. Uriel Calleros hit a 3-pointer and Marshall Woolf added a basket for an 18-13 halftime deficit.

Kiowa County's Luke Ballard scored 16 points, but was held to two second-half points by Joel Ortiz and Trey Fisher.

HALSTEAD — Larned's fourth-quarter rally came up short in a heartbreaking 53-51 loss to No. 1 ranked Hesston in the 3A Halstead basketball substate. The Indians nearly erased an 8-point deficit in the final minute. But Larned's Jack Stelter missed a free throw on a two-shot attempt to tie with no time left. 

Larned's Chance Sanger scored 20 points and Brock Skelton (14) and Andreus Tucker (10) also scored in double figures.

Stafford (12-12) was paced by Ethan Hildebrand with 15 points and Nathan Lowther with 10 points.

WAKEENEY — Underdog Central Plains nearly rallied from a 12-point deficit, but lost 44-41 in Thursday's 1A WaKeeney basketball substate. The Oilers (10-14) upset LaCrosse to reach the substate. J.J. Heredia led the Oilers with 14 points and Lawson Oeser added nine points.

Stockton's Josh Coleman scored 16 points and made four 3-pointers.
