It was a hot and rough Thursday for local American Legion baseball teams. Following a 9-1 loss to Andover in pool play, the Great Bend Braves fell to Hays, 18-0 ending Great Bend’s season.

On the senior level, the Chiefs rallied from a 3-1 deficit but could not muster enough firepower from the plate as Great Bend dropped a 6-4 decision in game one of a doubleheader against Russell. The Chiefs held the lead midway through game two but Russell mounted a nine-run rally and defeated Great Bend by a score of 13-6. Thursday’s second game was called late in the contest as one of the Chiefs’ players was exhibiting symptoms of heat exhaustion.

The Chiefs finish their regular season mark two games above .500 at 20-18 following the losses to Russell. Great Bend will begin pool play next Wednesday as the Chiefs face Garden City at 2 p.m. in a double elimination tournament at Dodge City.
