HOISINGTON – The Hoisington Cardinals erased their patented slow start with a 16-2 scoring burst to put away the Pratt Greenbacks 57-43 in Friday’s Central Kansas League basketball showdown.
The Cardinals cruised after a 16-2 scoring burst for a 22-13 lead. Drew Nicholson regained his shooting magic with 22 points and six consecutive free throws. The Cardinals consistently made the extra pass as Leyton Haxton, Mason Haxton, Chance Robinson and Dylan Richards dished out first-half assists.
Robinson and sparkplug Holt Hanzlick each drew charging fouls. Pratt converted 15 of 46 field goals and committed 18 turnovers. Nicholson scored 14 second-half points. Mason Haxton (8), Braden Mooney (6) and Hanzlick (6) contributed offensively. The Cardinals scored off turnovers, but play their best when they push the ball after missed shots.
“We have to push the ball and get some wide-open layups to build our confidence,” said Hoisington coach Kyle Haxton. “We looked for one another.”
The start was frustrating.
Haxton is accustomed to slow starts. Hoisington converted 1 of 10 field goals to trail 11-6.
“It was a struggle and we didn’t capitalize,” Haxton said. “But we stayed the course. We had guys who were frustrated. We got shots we wanted. We continued to take looks.”
The Cardinals (13-3, 4-2 CKL) travel to Smoky Valley Tuesday. Pratt (7-10, 2-4 CKL) was paced by Payton Koehler with 11 points.
